On the morning of July 3, 2024, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Managing Partner of HM&P, attended and spoke at the workshop titled "Protecting Personal Data in the Digital Environment - Comparative Study of Vietnamese and Thai Law." The event was organized by the Faculty of International Law at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law.

The workshop saw participation from notable figures, including Associate Professor Dr. Tran Viet Dung, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, and Dr. Phan Hoai Nam, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of International Law. The event was also attended by faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduates from the university. Attorney Nguyen Van Phuc was honored to be one of the distinguished guests, alongside experts from various agencies and businesses.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Phan Hoai Nam emphasized the global importance of personal data protection. He highlighted the challenge of balancing business development and human rights, especially personal privacy. Dr. Nam pointed out the limitations of Decree 13/2023/ND-CP and the discrepancy between legal regulations and practical implementation, stressing the urgent need for discussion and recommendations to enhance the legal framework for data protection.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Viet Dung added that the Faculty of International Law aims to address pressing societal issues through seminars. These events provide a scientific forum for legal experts to discuss and propose balanced approaches that align with state goals while protecting the interests of businesses and individuals involved in technology-related economic activities.

The workshop featured two main sessions: "Legislation on Personal Data Protection in Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore" and "International Context on Personal Data Protection". Delegates engaged in lively discussions about the challenges of Decree 13 and explored how Vietnam's data protection regulations can harmonize the interests of individuals and business activities of both domestic and foreign enterprises. Developing a comprehensive Personal Data Protection Code that ensures human rights and business interests is a critical issue for Vietnam.

Lawyer Nguyen Van Phuc, speaking at the conference, shared insights into the advantages and disadvantages of implementing Decree 13. He offered recommendations to regulatory bodies to mitigate negative impacts on business operations. He emphasized that practical feedback is essential for refining Vietnam's personal data protection regulations to better support businesses in compliance.

HM&P extends its gratitude to Ho Chi Minh City University of Law for the invitation to participate and speak at the workshop. We look forward to continuing our contributions to the university's scientific forums and other regulatory bodies from the practical perspective of a law firm.
